Most people bring home a puppy expecting to teach them.

How to sit.

How to stay.

Where to go potty.

How to walk politely on a leash.

Those lessons matter.

But somewhere along the way, something unexpected happens.

Your puppy starts teaching you.

They teach you patience when progress feels slower than you'd hoped.

They teach you consistency because mixed messages create mixed results.

They teach you forgiveness because yesterday's mistake doesn't matter to them today.

They teach you to celebrate the little victories.

The first accident-free day.

The first successful recall.

The first quiet walk.

The first time they choose to lay at your feet instead of chewing your favorite shoe.

They remind you to slow down.

To laugh more.

To spend more time outside.

To appreciate simple moments that are easy to overlook.

They'll greet you like you're the most important person in the world, even if you only stepped outside to get the mail.

They won't care what kind of car you drive.

They won't care what your job title is.

They won't remember whether you had a bad day at work.

They'll simply be happy you're home.

That's one of the most beautiful things about the relationship between people and dogs.

It's built on trust.

Communication.

Consistency.

And unconditional companionship.

Maybe that's why I don't think of dogs as "just pets."

I think of them as family.

And maybe that's why I still love what I do after more than three decades.
