I’m John Wasilishen, Owner and Master Trainer of NJ Puppy Whisperer. I’ve spent more than three decades helping New Jersey families understand their dogs, and there is something special about doing that work right here in my own hometown.

Since 1993, I’ve helped families build better communication with their puppies before little habits become big-dog problems. I believe the best place to start is exactly where the puppy lives — at home with the family.

BREED SPOTLIGHT — CANE CORSO PUPPIES

Cane Corso puppies are intelligent, powerful, observant and deeply connected to their families. They can be wonderful companions, but early education matters because they grow fast and they notice everything.

A Corso puppy that jumps, pulls, guards space, ignores boundaries or gets overly intense may still be manageable while small. Those same habits can become a serious challenge when the dog matures.

I like to begin with calm structure, leash foundations, recall, household boundaries, confidence and clear family communication. The goal is not to make a Corso less confident. The goal is to teach that confidence where to go.

WHAT I TEACH THE FAMILY

The puppy is only half of the training equation. The family matters just as much.

If one person allows jumping, another repeats commands five times and someone else changes the rules depending on the day, the puppy receives mixed information.

I teach families how dogs read timing, body language, repetition and consequences. Once the humans understand the language, the puppy has a much better chance of understanding the expectations.

Opening up the lines of canine communication is not just a slogan to me. It has been the foundation of my work for more than three decades.

No. Space gives a puppy freedom, but recall still has to be taught. In fact, more space can make it easier for a puppy to practice ignoring you if you do not build the habit early.

2. When should I start training a Cane Corso or other large-breed puppy?

Immediately, with age-appropriate expectations. The earlier we build communication, leash manners, boundaries and calm routines, the easier life becomes as the puppy gains size and strength.

3. Can you come to my home anywhere in Jackson?

My training model is private and at-home because I want to work with the real routines and behaviors happening where your puppy lives.

4. Can the whole family participate?

Yes, and I prefer it. The more consistent the family becomes, the clearer the message is for the puppy.
