Every Great Family Dog Starts Somewhere.

Heading Bringing a new puppy into a home with children is one of those wonderful family experiences that nobody ever forgets.3
The excitement. The laughter. The first puppy kisses.
And, of course, the occasional screaming when your adorable little bundle of joy decides your child’s pajama pants are the greatest tug toy ever invented.
Welcome to puppyhood.
After more than three decades of professionally educating puppies and their families throughout New Jersey, I’ve learned something important.

Puppies don’t arrive knowing how to behave around children.
And children don’t automatically understand how puppies think, communicate, play, or react.
That’s where I come in.
At NJ Puppy Whisperer, my private at-home Puppy Head-Start™ programs focus on developing confident puppies, knowledgeable parents, and children who understand how to safely interact with their new four-legged family members.
Because a successful relationship isn’t something we should leave to chance.
House Training
Your Puppy Doesn’t Know They’re Supposed to Be the Family Dog.
Here’s a little reality check I share with families.
Your puppy doesn’t see Mom, Dad, and three children standing in the living room.
They see five individuals, each behaving differently, communicating differently, and creating different experiences.
One child wants to cuddle.
Another wants to run.
Someone is squeaking a toy.
Dad is giving directions.
And Mom is wondering why nobody is listening.
Sound familiar?
Your puppy is trying to make sense of all of it.
That’s why I teach families one of my most important philosophies:
Teaching Children How to Communicate With Puppies
One of the biggest mistakes families make is expecting the puppy to do all the learning.
I believe the children need an education, too.
Not a complicated lecture about canine psychology.
Just practical, age-appropriate lessons that help them understand their new best friend.
My 6 Fundamentals for Raising Puppies With Children
Teach calm greetings from day one.

Puppies naturally get excited around children. Fast movements, high-pitched voices, and enthusiastic greetings can increase jumping and play biting.
I teach families how to encourage four paws on the floor and reward calmer interactions.
Establish consistent family rules.

If one family member allows jumping, another encourages rough play, and someone else gets upset when the puppy becomes excited, we’re sending mixed messages.
Everyone needs to understand the same expectations.
Teach children to respect puppy body language.

Turning away, stiffening, avoiding contact, lip licking, and growling can all communicate discomfort.
Children should learn that puppies aren’t stuffed animals.
They’re living, feeling animals who need personal space.
Supervise every child-puppy interaction.

This is nonnegotiable.
Young children should never be left alone with a puppy, even one that appears gentle and affectionate.
A responsible adult must actively supervise interactions and step in when needed.
Teach appropriate play.

I encourage structured games using suitable toys rather than hands, clothing, or rough wrestling.
Our goal is for puppies to associate children with safe, enjoyable experiences.
Respect rest and quiet time.

Growing puppies need plenty of sleep.
Children should learn not to disturb a puppy while sleeping, eating, chewing, or resting in a designated safe space.
Play Biting, Jumping & Puppy Chaos: Let’s Talk About It.
One of the most common concerns I hear from parents is:
“John, our puppy is great with us, but the minute the kids start running, it’s like somebody flipped a switch.”

I understand.
Puppies explore with their mouths.
They chase movement.
They become overstimulated.
And sometimes they have the impulse control of a potato with four legs.
That doesn’t automatically mean you’ve brought an aggressive puppy into your home.
Normal puppy play biting and overexcitement are common developmental behaviors.
But they absolutely need proper guidance.

How I Help Families Address These Behaviors
-
Redirect mouthing toward appropriate chew toys.
-
Teach children to stop active play and get adult help when biting begins.
-
Reinforce four-paw greetings instead of jumping.
-
Establish appropriate playtime, rest, and activity schedules.
-
Recognize overstimulation before it becomes a problem.
-
Teach basic puppy impulse control through positive, consistent interactions.
-
Create realistic expectations for both children and puppies.

I don’t believe in allowing bad habits to develop and hoping the puppy simply grows out of them.
But I also don’t believe in frightening or physically intimidating a young puppy to establish control.
Good puppy leadership means providing consistency, clear expectations, patience, and appropriate boundaries.
Why At-Home Puppy Education Makes Sense for Families
For over 30 years, I’ve brought puppy education directly into New Jersey homes.

And there’s a very good reason.

Your puppy doesn’t live in a classroom.

Your puppy lives with your family.

They’re learning when the kids come downstairs in the morning.
They’re learning during breakfast.
They’re learning when the doorbell rings, when friends visit, and when the entire house gets a little noisy.
A training environment might help introduce certain skills.
But your home is where those lessons have to become part of daily life.

My Private At-Home Family Coaching Focuses On:
A Simple Daily Routine for Puppies & Families
Successful puppy raising doesn’t require turning your household into a military academy.
It does require some structure.

Here’s the kind of routine I help families develop.
Morning
Start with a bathroom opportunity, breakfast, a little supervised interaction, and a short positive learning experience.
After school
Allow the puppy to wake up, go outside, and enjoy a supervised, age-appropriate activity with the children.
Evening
Practice calm greetings, appropriate play, and relaxing while the family spends time together.
Remember, puppies need substantially more rest than many families realize. Overtired puppies often become mouthier, jumpier, and harder to settle.
Sometimes the answer to puppy chaos isn’t another hour of play.
Sometimes the little guy just needs a nap.
And frankly, after working with puppies and children all day, I can appreciate that.
Why Early Puppy Education Matters
During puppyhood, your dog is developing important associations about people, environments, sounds, and everyday experiences.

Positive, age-appropriate exposure can help puppies become more comfortable and adaptable as they mature.
But exposure should never mean forcing interactions.

A frightened puppy doesn’t benefit from being passed around to every child at a family gathering.

And children don’t benefit from being told to hug a puppy who is clearly trying to move away.

I teach families that confidence comes from good experiences, not forced experiences.

My approach focuses on communication, observation, safety, and a realistic understanding of canine development.
Your Children Are Growing Up. So Is Your Puppy.
Here’s one last thought.

Puppyhood doesn’t last very long.

Those little paws get bigger.
The puppy teeth eventually disappear.
The clumsy little dog who follows your children from room to room grows into an adult companion.

But the habits and relationships you’re developing today can influence your dog’s behavior for years to come.

After more than half my life working with dogs and their families, I still believe there are few things more rewarding than watching a child and a dog develop a genuine bond built on mutual respect.

That’s why I do what I do.
